Netflix no longer highest-earning app – This app is the new number one


As far as the non-paid category is concerned, WhatsApp, Messenger, TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram emerged as the top five most downloaded

Netflix is no longer the highest-earning non-gaming app for the first time since late-2016. The new king in this space is Tinder, which has zoomed past the video-streaming as per the Q1 2019 revenues.

Tinder has grossed $260.7 million from Google Play Store and Apple App Store, which is a significant upscale when pitted against Netflix, as its revenues dropped 15 percent since last quarter to reach $216.3 million. These figures were released by intelligence firm Sensor Tower in a study. Also, the dating app grew its quarter-on-quarter revenues by an impressive 42 percent.

For Tinder, the game changer was perhaps Tinder Gold, which has become an instant hit amongst the younger crop in India. It needs to be mentioned that Tinder has never shared country-specific numbers and if the figures of Gold are considered, there are more than 3 million subscribers and 1.7 million have come in 2018 alone.

“One of the things that stood out to me is that Indian women on Tinder get super-like — which is a way of showing more interest — at a rate that is much higher than women anywhere else in the world,” Tinder CEO Elie Seidman told Hindustan Times.

As far as India’s market is concerned, Seidman said that it is perhaps the most important market for the company and they are very keen on expanding.

“India is the biggest market for us in Asia. We think it has the biggest potential in the future. We think of the app as another tool in your life to make your life better. Arguably, it makes the most important part of your life better. In terms of potential India is very important and we’ve been very open about that,” he further added.

As far as the non-paid category is concerned, WhatsApp, Messenger, TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram emerged as the top five most downloaded. These were closely followed by SHAREit, YouTube, LIKE Video, Netflix and Snapchat. TikTok’s biggest market of growth has been India as it has contributed almost 88.6 million new users to the platform only in the last three months.
