On the heels of the Motorola Razr, Xiaomi could soon come out with a similar flip phone. It needs to be mentioned here that the patent application was filed with the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) way back in August 2018 and it shows the new foldable smartphone by Xiaomi with a clamshell design. As per Dutch website LetsGoDigital, it received approval by the authority on December 6.
The twist is reportedly inspired from Asus’ implementation of a Flip Camera module which can be seen previously on the Asus 6z. Also, the device has a flip camera system which binds all the three different cameras. There could well be a small display which shows basic notifications icons on top. When the phone is folded, this flip camera module then acts as a secondary display, and as soon as it is unfolded, it will be operational only when the user wants to capture selfies.
What does the design offer?
Xiaomi has shown off a prototype folding device which is very similar to the Samsung Galaxy Fold. This device will have a folding display with two hinges on either side. Hence, the user can fold out the display from either side for a larger canvas. Having said this, Xiaomi has not officially launched any commercial variant of the device yet. The closest it has veered to the aforementioned design is when it launched the Mi MIX Alpha concept device that has a wraparound display with no side bezels.
On the other hand, the Motorola Razr too has not come out commercially and is currently bracketed in the premium range despite packing in midrange specifications. There have been reports that this new Razr will be launched in India as Motorola’s flagship offering.
