Snapchat reacts to waning interest – New gaming console soon?

As per tech analysis firm Midia, Snapchat was concerned with the waning number of audience on its social media platform and hence, they decided to incorporate gaming facilities in the app.

As per the latest buzz in the gaming domain, Snapchat is all set to join the bandwagon. According to a report in Cheddar, Snap Inc. will announce its gaming initiative on April 4 at the Snap Partner Summit in West Hollywood, California.

The aforementioned event is being promoted with the tagline “Less Talk. More Play.” Also, the event will see the introduction of “Project Cognac” (internal codename), which will feature games that work solely in the Snapchat app.

The move to turn the focus to the gaming platform was first reported back in June last year when the gaming platform was expected to be rolled out launch in the fall with an in-app store and support for external developers. In the wake of this development, it acquired British VR and gaming startup PlayCanvas last year.

As per tech analysis firm Midia, Snapchat was concerned with the waning number of audience on its social media platform and hence, they decided to incorporate gaming facilities in the app.

Says the study: More than half of Snapchat’s weekly active user (WAU) base play mobile games, with 47% playing every week. If Snap can sell games content to just a portion of this user base, it could have a significantly positive impact on its average revenue per user (ARPU). This is because in-game purchases and paid downloads open up an alternative revenue channel alongside advertising. Furthermore, establishing a games marketplace will also create more ad inventory for Snap to sell.

It needs to be mentioned here that Snap understands that it has become imperative to always maintain engagement especially when economy gaming has become an important space. However, there might not be an immediate spurt in the users, but then, the existing Snap users could spend more time on the app which will be a massive tick in growing engagement.
