US gaming industry earns record revenue

Some top-selling games of last year include Red Dead Redemption 2 and Black Ops 4 of the hit Call of Duty franchise.

America’s gaming industry is definitely on a roll! According to a latest report, the video gaming industry in the US has set a record for itself by earning a revenue of $43.4 billion in 2018.

Thanks to games like Fortnight and Pokemon Go, the spending on video games in the US rose by a staggering 18 per cent from last year.

These figures have been released by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) and market tracker NPD Group. An analyst from NPD video games said in a statement that consumers of all ages were attracted to games, be it playing on the go on their phones or at their homes on their personal computers or gaming consoles.

He said that the subscription and streaming services in the video game industry have gained momentum in the last year ever since playing on all types of devices increased a great deal. He added that the future of the industry looked full of possibilities for both, gamers and the video game industry.

When it comes to the spending on video game hardware, it has increased to $7.5 billion from last year’s $6.5 billion.

Coming to the gaming software department, gamers spent $35.8 billion on buying various software, subscriptions, and in-game virtual item purchases. According to the data released by ESA and NPD, it is an 18 per cent increase from 2017.

Some top-selling games of last year include Red Dead Redemption 2 and Black Ops 4 of the hit Call of Duty franchise.

Industry experts believe that interactive entertainment has emerged as the most influential form of entertainment in America in today’s time.

In the US, video games are played by over 150 million people and the gaming industry has provided jobs to as many as 220,000 people in the country.

If one was to go by the impressive figures, it will not be an exaggeration to say that the industry will continue to thrive even after numerous studies have suggested that playing video games excessively is harmful to an individual’s mental and physical health.
