International Women’s Day Special
Kanika Gauri, a Mass Communication graduate from Delhi is an example of many aspiring women entrepreneurs. The 27-year-old is helming a macho-heavy workforce comprising of a sales team and backend employees at one of the most successful Sales outsourcing companies AOB India. She might have started from the scratch but today the result of her earnest work in the challenging mainstream business environment is helping AOB India grow rapidly.
As Director Operations, Kanika Gauri is responsible for all the backend ops of clients at AOB. She recalls that her journey has not been easy. She co-founded the company along with Dr. Praveen Kumar in a three-bedroom flat with just two employees in 2014. In the last five years, the company has grown to become one of the most sought-after names in the field of sales outsourcing. Though it had a humble start, AOB has about 400 employees and three offices in Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai. Kanika’s journey of reaching this landmark is inspiring for many women who aspire to become an entrepreneur.
Kanika is a double graduate in Journalism & Communication, and Fine Arts, and a post-graduate in Mass Communication. She is a certified Google Digital Marketer. She is a highly skilled Illustrator artist and Concept Developer. Despite all these skills, Kanika recalls that there were jittery times in her course when it almost felt like the company would shut down. Venturing into a new business is challenging and hardships double, if not multiply, when you are a woman. Sales outsourcing is a field where women remain highly outnumbered and can often feel like outsiders. Kanika says that there used to be odd hours, crazy schedules, and heading an all-men sales team was often challenging. But her spirits remained undaunted and slowly things started to gain momentum.
Regardless of all the discourses over empowerment, women like Kanika represent a meager section of their gender, since only a handful make it to this level and often get deterred by the decades-old reputation of an ‘alpha-male territory’.
Today AOB India is one of the most coveted sales outsourcing companies in the country. Under her leadership, the company has some big names in its client list like PayTM, Keventers, Panasonic, Dabur, India Bulls, Go Fresh, Oyo Rooms, iMenu 360, and many more.
There have been highs and lows in the business, but there has been no looking back for her. She has done some unprecedented things. She has managed to shake up the way things work in the world of sales outsourcing. She has never been hesitant in getting in the thick of things, be it being firm with the employees and pushing them to get the numbers when needed or working smartly to bag a project from a client. She has done it all and proved her mettle.
